Victor Wallace (Victor Black)
Engineer, Technology Entrepreneur and Pioneer of Evidence-Based Bodybuilding Harm Reduction
Victor Wallace, better known within the international bodybuilding community as Victor Black, is an Australian engineer, former technology entrepreneur and bodybuilding educator whose work has helped reshape how performance-enhancement practices are understood and taught.
Before entering bodybuilding education, Victor built his professional career in engineering and emerging technology. He worked with companies operating at the forefront of the early internet and advanced computing industries, including Cisco Systems and Silicon Graphics—a pioneering computer-graphics company whose technologies helped lay the foundations for the modern GPU computing industry.
Victor later founded his own software company, which he successfully sold in 2006. Although the sale allowed him to retire professionally, he soon discovered that retirement offered little satisfaction for someone accustomed to building businesses, solving complex problems and working at the leading edge of technology.
He chose to direct that energy toward bodybuilding—a pursuit that had been a lifelong passion rather than his profession.
Victor began training as a teenager and remained a natural athlete until approximately 36 years of age. During that period, he competed multiple times as an amateur natural bodybuilder and accumulated almost two decades of practical experience in natural training, nutrition, supplementation and physique development.
He did not begin his own performance-enhancement journey until after retiring, when he had the time and resources required to study the subject seriously and approach it with the same analytical discipline he had applied throughout his engineering and technology career.
In 2016, Victor introduced a structured, evidence-based approach to bodybuilding education and performance-enhancement harm reduction. His objective was not simply to describe what bodybuilders were doing, but to explain why particular practices worked, where the risks arose and how athletes could make more informed and responsible decisions.
This work led to the development of the Black Safer Use Models—systematic frameworks designed to reduce avoidable harm associated with performance-enhancing drug use. The principles introduced through these models have subsequently influenced education delivered by major bodybuilding coaching academies and educators around the world.
Victor is therefore best known as an enhancement educator and as one of the foundational figures in modern bodybuilding harm reduction. However, this description represents only part of his experience. His educational materials encompass the full spectrum of physique development, including training, nutrition, supplementation, recovery, contest preparation and performance enhancement.
His central argument is that bodybuilding has long understood many of the practices required to build elite physiques. Champions from the 1990s could still stand competitively on a modern professional stage. The most important development of the past decade has not necessarily been the discovery of entirely new methods, but the adoption of evidence-based thinking that allows coaches and athletes to better understand why established practices work, when they should be applied and how their risks can be managed.
Victor’s contribution has been especially influential through the coaches and educators he has trained. His reach is predominantly generational: his students teach their own athletes, clients and future coaches, allowing his frameworks to extend far beyond those he has personally coached.
In India, one of the best-known advocates of his harm-reduction education is Dr. Gurdesh Man, who has helped communicate these principles throughout the Indian bodybuilding community. High-profile Indian athletes—including Olympia-qualified competitors coached by Victor’s students—demonstrate the broader reach of this educational lineage.
Today, at 58 years of age, Victor continues to combine engineering logic, technological innovation and decades of bodybuilding experience to advance a more informed approach to physique development. His legacy is not based simply on teaching athletes what to do, but on giving coaches and athletes the intellectual framework to understand their decisions, evaluate risk and pursue bodybuilding with greater knowledge and responsibility.
